Masochism

MASOCHISM:
[mas-uh-kiz-uhm]
- Noun
Definition: The Gulag by Anne Applebaum. 736 total pages, featuring 700 pages of mind-numbing statistics plus 36 pages of actual interesting content.

Sometime in April 2008, my bassist Stony mentioned there was only one military/political book he'd never finished. We trade books back and forth, having the same interests in large clanking machines that blow things up and all varieties of human suffering. A book Stony can't finish must be a heroic challenge. I'm a sucker for those.

The Gulag was presented to me at the next Drifter practice.

I started reading it December 2009 in the movie theater, waiting for The Road to begin. Finished October 2010. Eleven months. What a slog. Read every bloody boring page. So there, Stony. I win.

That's so funny. I read this book for a book club. A BOOK CLUB! That was a somber book club meeting indeed.

Maybe the length of the book was meant to evoke the experience of the gulag. I once read this very good but very long book called The Good Soldier Ċ vejk. It's about war, and part of its shtick was that its length evoked the endlessness and pointlessness of war.
